FAIRBORN — It wasn’t quite unanimous, but the Madison High School girls basketball team still earned enough points at the tournament draw meeting on Sunday, Feb. 7, at Fairborn High School to claim the No. 1 seed in the Division III Wilmington sectional tournament.

The Mohawks (18-0), who are ranked fourth in the state in D-III, received 12 of a possible 13 first-place votes and totaled 180 points to grab the top spot.

Badin (14-3) had the other first-place vote and totaled 157 points as the No. 2 seed.

“It’s a good feeling for our kids and our coaching staff,” Madison coach John Rossi Jr. said. “We’re tickled to be the No. 1 seed, but really it’s just worth a cup of coffee. We’ve got to go play the games.”

Madison chose to go into the lower bracket with its pick. Extending out to a potential district finals matchup, the Mohawks could face either Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy or Madeira, the second and third seeds in the Fairfield sectional.

“We weren’t real sure if we wanted to go in the upper or lower bracket honestly,” said Rossi, whose team finished as regional runners-up last season. “What you do is try to put yourself in a position to win a district championship.”

Madison’s first game is at
6 p.m. on Feb. 16 against Clermont Northeastern.

Waynesville (13-4) is the third seed, followed by Fenwick (8-10), Fayetteville Perry (14-4) and Carlisle (15-4).

“Whichever direction we went had the potential to face a powerhouse team,” said Fenwick coach Donn Burrows, who chose the upper bracket and could face Girls Greater Cincinnati League rival Badin in the sectional finals. “Madison and Badin, to me, are No. 1 seeds in just about any sectional in the state, so I just jumped in the bracket I felt was best for my team.”

The Falcons’ first game will be at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 22 against the winner between Springfield Northeastern and Carlisle.

“We’re two quality teams,” Carlisle coach Randy Glover said of a first-round game against the Jets, which will be played at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 15. “There is no easy path. If you want to get out of this sectional, you’re going to have to play somebody good anyway. We’re playing pretty well right now and we look forward to the matchup.”

...but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Josh. 24:2, 15)
